The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median time for people to get ready for the new year is around 4 p.m.
The National Weather Service has already projected a higher than normal number of snowstorms.
In New York City, a cold snap was expected with temperatures dropping to just below zero on Wednesday.
In Boston, temperatures could fall into the mid-20s as well, the Boston Globe reported.
The cold snap also means a higher chance of snow.
The National Weather Forecast System says the cold snap could bring a cold front to the Northeast.
Weather.com also reported on Wednesday that the cold front is likely to be from central and eastern North America, as well as eastern Canada.
As of Thursday morning, the National Weather service has predicted a total of 11 snowstorms and 4 to 6 frost events.
The forecast calls for rain to continue through Saturday and into the New Years.
The Weather Channel has posted a map of where snow and ice is likely in New York and the Northeast this New Year.
