New Year’s Eve is one of the most important events in Australia, so why do we not celebrate it the same way we celebrate the Australian New Year?
That is the question that is on the minds of a New Year partygoer who got married this year.
It was a night that had him talking about what it meant to be a newlyweds.
“I had a lot of guests this year, I had my own family, my own friends, all of us,” said Shane Bowers.
His wife, Emily, and their two young children arrived in Perth on Thursday and had just celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary.
When asked if they would be able to celebrate New Year with a drink at a bar in Perth, Shane said “yes”.
“We’ve got a lot more people here than we did last year,” Emily said.
“We had a few drinks and a lot to celebrate with everyone.”
The kids are so excited.
They’re like, ‘Mommy, why are you celebrating this?’
“My husband and I are going to the bar with the kids to celebrate this special day.”
Shane said he did not have a specific New Year celebration planned for the occasion.
“I think we’ve got it sorted out,” he said.
The Bowers’ first year in Australia was a big success, but their first year was not without controversy.
Emily Bowers became pregnant in December last year and Shane has been told by a fertility doctor that he will not be able get a vasectomy until he is at least 50.
His family are worried about the impact that would have on his health and he said he had been told he could get married again if he could have a vasectomies.
Emily and Shane, who are both from New South Wales, have now got married in Sydney.
